What is it?

Dandelion is one of many staples in the herb community. Its benefits range from liver/kidney detox to lowering blood sugar and blood pressure. Dandelion is also rich in vitamins A, C, and K, iron, potassium, folate, and calcium and has antioxidant properties. The antioxidant properties help fight inflammation and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress of the placenta is one of the causes of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

 

Dandelion before pregnancy

  • Dandelion acts as a diuretic and helps the body get rid of excess water. This diuretic effect helps clear the kidneys of waste and salt. Wherever salt goes, water follows. With this analogy you can see how the body is rid of excess water. Due to the release of the excess water, the blood pressure is usually lowered also.
  • Dandelion also detoxes the liver. It stimulates the liver and bile flow.

 

Dandelion during pregnancy

  • Dandelion is rich in vitamins A, C, and K. It also contains iron, which is great for the hematologic changes taking place during pregnancy. Some women experience anemia during pregnancy and even before pregnancy. The iron content of dandelion helps restore the iron loss. 
  • Some women also experience edema during pregnancy. Dandelion is a great diuretic to get rid of the excess water and lower blood pressure. Be cautious with taking blood pressure and diuretic medication when taking dandelions. Dandelion can increase the effects and lower the blood pressure even more. 

 

Dandelion use in postpartum

  • Dandelion during postpartum provides the mother and the baby with vitamins A, C, and K, iron, calcium, and potassium. These are some of the important vitamins and minerals for postpartum recovery. 
  • As mentioned before, its diuretic effects help rid the body of excess water.
  • Dandelion also helps relieve constipation, which is common during postpartum.
  • According to Chinese medicine, dandelion may also help assist with breastfeeding. It provides vitamin C and iron to the body. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. Women lose blood, and some even hemorrhage after birth. Be cautious with dandelion if you have an increased risk of bleeding. Dandelion contains vitamin K, which slows down the clotting factor. Vitamin C also promotes development of the immune system.
  • The calcium content provided from dandelion aids in healthy bones and teeth for both mother and baby. It also helps lower the chances of postpartum depression.
